Object, Méret Elisabeth Oppenheim, 1936

We can learn a way of seeing that undoes gender: Méret Elisabeth Oppenheim’s 1936 Object, a gazelle fur-covered cup, saucer and spoon, makes us feel strange about both gender and the object. Oppenheim’s creation is deliciously useless for practical purposes — though the fur hints that it could keep the tea warm — so the challenge for designers here would be to create drag-objects that also function.
